Travel Tip For Hawaii

Well, the day has arrived, it is time to hop on the plane and head to paradise!
Are you ready? Have you packed everything?
We have some tips to help.

1. You know it is going to be long plane ride, so prepare. Good book, earplugs (you will still be able to hear,
you just wont have the engines roaring in your head). Beverage, earphones, and Ipod.

2. Keep the carry-ons managable. Trust that everyone else will bring way too much, so
the less you have to deal with, the happier your traveling experience will be. And be nice to the flight attendants.
It's a tough job keeping a couple hundred cranky, cramped, tired people happy for several hours.

3. Review our Cultural Notes section - see "Customs" link on left of page.
It is never too soon to start practicing "acting like a local"

4. Don't forget that you are on vacation, probably with someone really special to you.
So remember to do a few extra things on this trip. Add a flower to her hair. Tell him he looks
good in that snorkle mask. Plan a quiet picnic in a local park.Take a stroll at sunset.
The point is to not get so busy and caught up in the "vacation" that you forget to have a vacation.

5. Wear sunscreen. Re-apply often. Really.Trust me on this one. Really, I'm begging you here.

6. Bring a jacket, Volcano and Mauna Kea get quite cold. Really.

7. When you pick up your bags at the baggage area, stand back away from the baggage. I know, all the other tourists will be shoulder to shoulder trying to get their bag first. Guess what, you're in Hawaii. Stand back. Really. Wait for some of the bags to clear then move up. If you see someone older than you, or younger than you who needs help... help them. In Hawaii it is not about being first - in fact, locals will give "stink eye" (dirty looks) to those who rush, jump in line, push, or are in any way rude. So, when that "mainland" urge strikes, take a breath and relax. You wont miss anything, but you will feel less stressed out.

8. Who's your Uncle? Any man or woman older than you should be addresses as "Aunti" or "Uncle." Really. Try it. It is a title of respect like Mam or Sir, but if you say Mam or Sir here you might get "stick eye."

9. Tip, tip, and tip some more! Everyone gets tips here in Hawaii. Car hops, bag boys, the beach boy, cocktail girl, the kid who ran and got you a bottle of water, everyone. It's how we say thank you. So just be ready. You will be remembered and it will pay off in the long run, you'll see. Good things come to those who tip.

9. Have fun, we'll see you when you get here!
